The South Dakota Bureau of Information and Telecommunications has issued generative AI guidelines for state agency staff that treat AI output as a starting point to be reviewed and fact-checked. The South Dakota Board of Regents announced systemwide AI objectives on May 20, 2026, adopted its first AI and emerging technology policy (BOR Policy 7.9) in July 2026, and runs an "AI Ready" effort covering responsible AI, AI literacy and research. In July 2026 the regents approved bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in AI engineering at South Dakota State University, starting fall 2026.
