AI in Montana

Montana's 2025 Legislature enacted HB 178, which limits how state and local government may use artificial intelligence and requires disclosure and human review of consequential AI decisions, and passed HJ 4 requesting an interim AI study due before September 15, 2026. Governor Greg Gianforte's Executive Order 5-2025 (August 2025) launched the 406 JOBS initiative, directing agencies to expand AI training and AI readiness across the workforce. In October 2025 the Office of Public Instruction released Montana's first K-12 AI guidance, developed with the Montana Digital Academy.
