AI in Maine

Governor Janet Mills created the Maine Task Force on Artificial Intelligence by executive order in December 2024; its report, released October 31, 2025, makes 34 recommendations on AI literacy, the economy and workforce, education, health care, risk protections and state government. Maine's Office of Information Technology issued a Generative AI Policy for the Executive Branch in July 2024, replacing a 2023 moratorium; it requires human review of outputs, attribution, and use of approved tools only. The Maine Department of Education publishes an interactive AI Guidance Toolkit for schools, and the Maine Technology Institute launched MERC-AI in 2025, giving eligible businesses free access to generative AI courses.
